Sim Grid With Josh Martin

Originally from the North of Scotland, Josh joins us today to discuss the Sim Grid. He’s now living in the West Midlands due to work. He studied Psychology at university and as he was getting towards the end of his degree, he was trying to figure out his career opportunities. He always had a strong interest in motor spot but in particular, video games, like every person his age does growing up. Josh cleverly spotted a gap in the market in the sense of introducing brands and consumers to video games.

So, his role has more recently evolved into helping to run competitive video game events with E Sports . He’s also worked with the likes of Formula 1, Formula E and big global brands. Really, trying to help introduce them to this demographic of a younger generation. In some cases, older generation too and that’s what his roles transitioned into now. He works out the sim grids and is head of commercial marketing.

How it Works

You can find collective groups of individuals online if you have a common interest in such as Formula 1 for example. They will then opt to take a place in a competition, for example, they might be representing the actual Formula 1 teams themselves. They pay an entry fee and then compete which will be broadcast, either digitally or on live tv. It offers an opportunity for not just the players to represent their talents but there’s commercial opportunities for brands too.

Going Digital

Obviously with lockdown, there was the restriction of real world activated across the board but for motor sports specifically. The similarity is there between the virtual elements and real elements.

Josh’s dad who’s in his 70’s, grew up watching the likes of David Coulthard and could then see him play again, digitally, which was nice for him.

The competitions are starting to have a prize pool. For example, Formula 1 with there E Sport series is at 1 million US dollars! A very decent amount of money. In many cases, a lot of the players taking part are being paid by the teams to be the best so that they can reclaim as much back as possible.

Sim Grid

The Sim Grid is essentially like a business that runs within this digital racing. It facilitates competitions but also for brands to become involved and market themselves. In some ways, it’s like how formula 1 works, but for the digital side.

The Market

By large, Josh has seen that your typical user as such is a male who’s based in Europe, between 18-45 and got a disposable income 2-5k a year
