DISC Personality Styles, Merrick Rosenberg, The Next 100 Days Podcast

There are 4 types and each type has its own energy. You’ll have one or two as core styles. By understanding this you can build better relationships.

Merrick is mainly Parrott and part Eagle.

EAGLE – dominant
PARROTT – interactive
DOVE – supportive
OWL – conscientious

Global Personality Differences

Merrick’s use of birds creates a hook for people to recall their training. He explains this by saying “a model is a tool for the mind”.  So, why are these systems so complicated? The idea here, is you can figure out another’s style, you can flex to them. It helps people understand themselves and get along with others better too.

Merrick has taught the Birds Styles to more than 100,000 people! That includes more than 50% of the Fortune 100 companies. His company has 750 trainers around the world.

Decide Your Style

Kevin referred to Strengthsfinder. We did a podcast on this years back – Episode 2

Merrick told us that 86% of the time opposites attract. We complement each other and we bring something else to the mix.

Children too…

Merrick has noticed a personality styles difference between his 2 children. One is a Parrott and the other an Owl.

Kevin observes this speaks to nature rather than nurture.

The Challenge is to understand WHO we are Speaking to

…and communicate in THEIR style.

How does the programme work in corporations?

If you were to ask a manager, which creates more stress for you? (A) The lack of skill of your people or (B) The drama created by how they work together? It would be no contest, overwhelmingly drama.

That happens because people don’t understand each other. If an Owl is asking you loads of questions, it is not because they don’t trust you. It’s because they care about quality. If you remove the judgement it gets replaced with acceptance. When that happens the drama goes away.

The birds become the language of the organisation. Some organisations will have desktop birds sitting on every desk. Graham’s desk will have an Eagle. Kevin’s desk will have an Owl. If you were at an Eagle’s desk do this:

– BE BRIEF, BE BRILLIANT, BE GONE!

With a Dove, you might start by saying, “Hey, how are you?”. You wouldn’t jump right to business. It’s important to make a personal connection by softening your words.

How to Pitch an Audience

…where they are all different personality styles. And they all are usually.

Start in your own style. If you hit all 4 styles, who do you connect with? Everyone! It’s a holistic way of communicating.
